In our Q3 release breakdown, we highlighted the game-changing addition of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server and how it set the stage for a smarter, more connected Workfront.
Those connections are more tangible than ever with the Q4 2026 release, and the results are pretty inspiring.
After stepping into my role as an Adobe Workfront Champion and collaborating with a global network of peers and product experts, it is clear that Adobe is deeply tuned into our everyday operational challenges. AI is still front and center and will continue to evolve, but Adobe still managed to balance that “AI integration blitz” with practical, everyday workflow enhancements that nerds like me get excited about.
As usual, there is a seemingly endless number of updates in a release, but here is our take on the most impactful (and dare I say, fun) features from the Q4 drop.
The future state is now
CX Coworker (Replacing AI Assistant): Starting in October, Adobe Coworker officially replaces the AI Assistant in the right rail for eligible quarterly release orgs.
- Why it matters: Coworker takes natural language execution to the next level. You can simply ask it to turn a strategy document into an execution brief, bulk create projects from an Excel file, check requests for missing details, or balance resources by moving open tasks. Instead of spending an hour manually clicking through screens, you simply ask Coworker to do the heavy lifting. Plus, the addition of the Fusion MCP means Coworker can tap into your existing automations conversationally without rebuilding underlying workflows.
- The MERGE perspective: As AI gains direct write capabilities, maintaining a robust operational framework and structured metadata is essential for preventing bad data and keeping workflows aligned.
- Admin note: Coworker rollout is phased by org eligibility and respects your existing Workfront permissions out of the gate.
AI Collaborators get smarter and more autonomous: AI Collaborators can now be assigned directly to issues, update project fields, and notify stakeholders upon completion.
- Why it matters: Your AI isn't just a chatbot anymore; it's an active participant that can pick up work automatically. You can set precise permissions for which specific task or project fields the AI can write to and which documents it can reference for context. The upcoming "Project Coordinator" collaborator is shaping up to potentially be really impactful. Having an AI dedicated to monitoring project progress, coordinating with the team, and surfacing next steps will multiply capacity in a truly collaborative space could be a massive win for Project Managers.
- The MERGE perspective: The very idea of an AI Project Coordinator can be ominous for some project managers, but rest assured, it's not here to steal anyone's job. It's really here to save project managers from drowning in administrative busywork. When AI takes care of routine status checks, updating fields, and nagging people for updates, PMs finally get room to breathe and focus on what they do best: driving strategy, navigating team dynamics, and managing risk. If you're rolling this out, change management is key—talk openly about job security early on and show your team how AI is an assistant, not a replacement. Just make sure to keep a human in the loop so PMs stay in the driver's seat for big decisions, and lean on solid audit logs to keep everything transparent and trustworthy.
- Admin note: Group admins can now create and manage AI collaborators directly from Setup.
Workfront Planning gets lots of love
Get ready to amp up your Planning Workspaces! Adobe has really listened to feedback and has released some much needed upgrades.
Dependent connected record fields & filtering: Workspace Managers can now define dependencies between connected record types.
- Why it matters: It's easier to put it in a specific context: When adding a connection from a Media Type record type to a dependent record type like Specs, you can configure the Specs field to only show values tied to the selected Media Type. Selecting a Media Type automatically filters the Specs picker. This new filtering forces users to select matching combinations, eliminating the grueling process of manual cleanup and keeping your architecture aligned.
- The MERGE perspective: Managing separate dropdown lists for every child workspace used to be an administrative headache. Setting up dependencies directly within global record types keeps your data structure completely centralized while making the UI feel seamless for end users. Whether someone is filling out a form, making quick inline edits, or updating record details, the filtering applies live everywhere—giving users a super clean experience without forcing admins to maintain isolated fields.
Multi-stage approvals for planning requests: Workspace administrators can now build single- or multi-stage approval processes for every Planning request form.
- Why it matters: You can assign individuals or teams to every stage, and requests will advance automatically once the required approvers sign off. Approvers are notified the moment it's their turn, drastically reducing lag time in approvals.
- The MERGE perspective: Honestly, this feels like something that should've been there from day one. Single-approver setups rarely work for Planning-level requests, and the old workarounds, like juggling status changes, extra notifications, and custom reports, were pretty clunky. Multi-stage approvals give us the clean workflow we actually need, plus a solid audit trail that makes governance a whole lot easier.
The "Finally!" features
Sometimes it’s the small functional or UI tweaks that get us the most excited. Here are our “Finally Favorites” for Q4:
- Grouped approvals: You can now group multiple related documents under a single approval workflow so they move through the exact same stages together, reducing review fatigue.
- Contextual custom form previews with real data: The form designer preview mode now lets you select an existing test object (project, task, issue, etc.) to preview forms populated with real contextual data and test advanced logic directly in the logic builder.
- Pivot table reports in Canvas Dashboards: Canvas Dashboards now support a native pivot table report type, enabling complete roll-ups with interactive drill-downs. Plus, Coworker can now build these for you with plain language prompts!
- Layout template enhancements: Admins can now hide an object’s Details page from the left navigation panel (provided at least one item remains visible), as well as hide system items like Setup and Help from the Main Menu.
Our Bottom Line:
Q4 really shows that Adobe is paying attention to the real-life needs of its users. AI is redefining how work gets done and will continue to grow into a fully formed and established operating model. Practical, everyday wins, like dependent fields, grouped approvals, and cleaner UI keep our admins sane and our users engaged. All that user feedback is making its way into the platform, giving us a release that feels balanced and actually fun to use.
